Final project

DATA 101, Spring 2018

For your final project, you will perform an analysis on an available dataset and present both your code and your findings/interpretations/visualizations in a Jupyter notebook.

Working on your own or with a partner, please do the following:

  • Find (and, if necessary, clean) a dataset.
  • Create a Jupyter notebook in which you perform some data wrangling, analysis, and visualization.
  • Extract and communicate an insight gleaned from your data analysis.
  • Present your primary finding in an "executive summary" at the beginning of the notebook (like you would in a professional analysis report).
  • Lightly narrate your process as you go in text surrounding the code blocks.
  • Draw attention to key points of evidence for your primary finding, through clear and direct text.
  • Upload your finished notebook into Canvas by Thursday, May 3, 12:00 noon along with your final self-assessment. (This is the scheduled time for our "final exam," but note that there will be no in-class exam, only this final project.)

Use the lab assignments you have done so far (and the midterm project) as a guide, but keeping in mind that you can provide less narrative text (and, of course, no instructions!) — only what you need to communicate your findings.

Also, please note that I will be out of town (house hunting!) May 1–5. I'll do my best to respond to emails, but I may not be able to reply quickly during those days. Please take full advantage of your in-class work time, and the office hours I hold on Monday, April 30 (9:00–10:30am, HCC 410).

Have fun with this!
